How Much to Set Aside for 1099 Taxes
The most common mistake new freelancers make is treating gross payment as take-home pay. As a 1099 worker, no employer withholds taxes for you — every dollar you receive may have a tax bill attached to it. This guide explains how to estimate the right set-aside amount.
The 25–30% Rule of Thumb
A widely used shortcut: set aside 25–30% of every gross payment into a separate savings account. This covers:
- Self-employment (SE) tax: ~14–15% on most income (15.3% × 92.35% factor)
- Federal income tax: 10–22% depending on your total taxable income
- State income tax: 0–10% depending on your state
The rule-of-thumb range exists because everyone's situation differs. Use the 1099 Tax Calculator for a personalized estimate.
Set-Aside by Income Band (Single Filer, 2026 Estimates)
These estimates assume a single filer, no other income, $5,000 in business expenses, and a 5% state rate. They are illustrative — your numbers will differ.
| Gross 1099 Income | SE Tax (est.) | Fed. Income Tax (est.) | Total Est. Tax | Set-Aside % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $30,000 | $3,520 | $1,080 | $5,900 | ~20% |
| $50,000 | $5,990 | $3,440 | $11,680 | ~23% |
| $75,000 | $9,130 | $7,080 | $19,960 | ~27% |
| $100,000 | $12,270 | $11,970 | $29,240 | ~29% |

A Practical Savings System
Here is a three-step system that works for most freelancers:
- Open a dedicated tax savings account. Label it "Taxes — Do Not Spend." A high-yield savings account works well.
- Transfer a fixed percentage on every payment. Calculate your percentage from the table above or the 1099 Tax Calculator. Transfer it the same day the payment arrives.
- Pay estimated taxes quarterly. On each due date (April 15, June 15, September 15, January 15), pay the balance owed from your tax account. See Quarterly Estimated Tax Calculator.
What Business Expenses Do to the Set-Aside
Legitimate business expenses directly reduce your net SE income, which reduces both SE tax and federal income tax. Every $1,000 of documented expenses saves roughly $300–$400 in taxes (depending on your bracket). See the 1099 Deductions Checklist for common deductions.
Limitations of This Guidance
This guidance does not account for: self-employed health insurance deduction, SEP-IRA or Solo 401(k) contributions, home office deduction, itemized deductions, child tax credits, or state-specific rules. All of these can reduce your actual tax owed. For a complete picture, consult a CPA or enrolled agent.
Frequently Asked Questions
A practical starting point is 25–30% of gross income for most freelancers earning $40,000–$120,000. Lower earners pay less because standard deductions absorb more income; higher earners may need 30–35% once higher federal brackets kick in.
Setting aside a fixed percentage immediately when you receive each payment is the most reliable method. Waiting until the quarterly due date introduces the risk of spending the money before the tax bill arrives.
A dedicated savings account for taxes is strongly recommended. It removes the mental ambiguity of "is this money available to spend?" and earns a small amount of interest while you hold it.
If you saved more than necessary, you will receive a refund after filing — or you can apply the overpayment to next year's estimated taxes. Overshooting is far less painful than undershooting.
